SAFARI GEAR CHECKLIST
FOR THE HEAD AND FACE:
SHADE HAT: Visor hat with good brim. Essential for protection from
equatorial sun.
SUNGLASSES: Essential for eye protection in the tropics.
SUNSCREEN: Plenty of complete sun block with a protection factor of
15 or more.
LIP BALM: With SPF rating of 15 or more
BANDANAS: Tied around the neck they give good sun protection. Can
be used to clean glasses, etc. FOR
THE UPPER BODY:
T-SHIRTS: 3 Maximum
UPPER BODY LAYERS: 1) Pile Jacket or sweater;
2) Wind shirts or Gore-Tex shell;
3) Rain coat or Gore-Tex shell.
FOR THE LEGS:
LONG HIKING PANTS: Or tights - no more than 2 pairs
total.
RAIN PANTS: Light weight is best.
WIND PANTS: (Optional).
HIKING SHORTS: No more than 2 pairs.
FOR THE FEET:
THIN SOCKS: Two pairs of synthetic socks to wear
under heavy wool socks. This helps to prevent blisters and keep
feet dry.
THICK SOCKS: Two or three pairs.
HIKING BOOTS: One pair medium weight. Should be large enough to
be comfortable to hike in.
GAITERS: One pair of gaiters to keep dirt from getting into hiking
boots. Low ones are best. (Optional)
TENNIS SHOES: One pair is enough - to wear in camp after hiking.
SLEEPING BAGS: Comfortable for 50 degree Fahrenheit temperature.
SLEEPING PADS: Comfortable closed cell foam camping mattress is
okay.
FOR DRINKING:
WATER BOTTLE: Two one-quart wide-mouthed plastic
bottles.
WATER TREATMENT: This is very important. The water in East Africa
is not unhealthy, although its flora content is different from what
you are used to. To keep your system running normally we recommend
that you bring "Portable Aqua" or "Polar Pure"
crystal Iodine in a bottle to treat drinking H20.
FILTRATION PUMP: Is also effective.
WATER FLAVORING: Gatorade, etc. makes treated water taste much better.
FOR CARRYING
YOUR GEAR:
DAY PACK: Small day pack for personal gear for the
day only.
FOR PERSONAL
HEALTH & COMFORT:
PERSONAL: First Aid kit, Drug kit and Pocket Knife.
TOWELS: Bathing in the Endabagah river is nice.
WASH & DRIES: Hand-wipes (Optional).
